Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon due in May; is a standalone title

Does not need copy of Far Cry 3 to play

A listing for Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon on the Xbox Marketplace website reveals the game won't be an expansion of Far Cry 3, but rather a standalone title.

Described as "THE Kick-Ass Cyber Shooter," the title will retain Far Cry 3's open-world nature, but appears to be in a new setting. The listing specifies a May 1 release.

The listing also suggests '80s action film actor Michael Biehn will make an appearance. The full description is in keeping with the retro-futuristic science fiction aesthetic revealed in screenshots. It reads:

"Welcome to an 80's VHS vision of the future. The year is 2007 and you are Sargent Rex Colt, a Mark IV Cyber Commando who's fighting against a cyborg army gone rogue. Your mission: get the girl, kill the baddies, and save the world.

"Experience every cliche of a VHS era vision of a nuclear future, where cyborgs, blood dragons, mutants, and Michael Biehn (Terminator, Aliens, Navy Seals) collide."

The news follows the leak of several Far Cry 3 Blood Dragon screenshots last week (see them below), as well as the unveiling of a website and teaser trailer.

No official gameplay details have been confirmed by publisher Ubisoft as yet.
