PS3 firmware updated to 4.40

Improves system stability and adds NFC reader support in Japan

Sony Computer Entertainment Japan has released PS3 firmware update 4.40.

According to the platform holder, the update introduces system stability improvements as well as support for this first party RC-S380 NFC reader.

The product has been out in Japan, Europe and North America for almost a year and can communicate with any devices that conform to the NFC Forum specification.

Despite the PlayStation 4 release date later this year, SCEE CEO Jim Ryan has said there are still "highly significant" unannounced PS3 games in the works.

These would appear to include Gran Turismo 6, according to comments recently attributed to SCEE senior vice-president Michael Denny.
