Renowned game designer Ron Gilbert has released details and screenshots of his first game since quitting developer Double Fine earlier this month.
The Monkey Island creator has teamed up with Clayton Kauzlaric, co-creator of DeathSpank, to construct a "musical Match-3 pirate RPG" called Scurvy Scallywags in The Voyage to Discover the Ultimate Sea Shanty.
The puzzle RPG is in development for iPhone, iPad and the pair "might" also create an Android port, Gilbert wrote on his blog.
The designer behind The Cave said he's wanted to create a match-3 RPG game for a few years, but publishers indicated little demand for the genre.
"Of course, a year later Puzzle Quest comes out and sells a billion copies," Gilbert notes.
He goes on to explain how his own interpretation of the Bejewelled formula will work in Sea Shanty:
"Unlike Puzzle Quest - and just about every other match-3 RPG that sprang up after it - in Scurvy Scallywags you actually move your hero/pirate around the board and position her/him next to enemies to do battle. It creates this new layer to the matching that is a lot of fun.
"We have close to one hundred different hats, shirts, heads, swords, etc you find and use to dress up your pirate. There are also ten different ships to build, plus a sea shanty you collect that is sung by real life pirate singers (they work for grog, quite inexpensive)."
Gilbert says that "with any luck" Scurvy Scallywags will release within "the next month or so."
