Online retailer ShopTo expects the new PS4 system will retail in the UK for about £400. It is unclear whether this figure is a random guess or if Sony has already met with retailers to offer some guidance.

US retailer EB Games has also added PS4 to its listings and is seeking $50 deposits on all orders.

"The PS4 is looking like a truly revolutionary console," said GAME chief executive Martyn Gibbs.

"Sony has raised the bar for how we will experience and access games and how gamers will control their experiences. The new features will give developers a whole new way to create incredible games, so we look forward to bringing the PS4 to the gaming communities of the UK.

"Many console launches have seen demand significantly outstrip supply so we would urge anyone wishing to get their hands on a PS4 from launch to register their interest with our store teams or online as soon as possible."

Sony revealed the PlayStation 4 at a New York press conference on Wednesday.

The PS4 release date is set for "holiday 2013", likely across Japan, Europe and the US.
