1998: PlayStation print advert

This week of course saw the official reveal of the PlayStation 4, and suffice to say it's looking pretty tasty. In the months leading up to the console's release all eyes will be on how Sony markets it to the public, something it's always been renowned for in the past.

Sony has embarked on countless marketing campaigns in the PlayStation's 19-year history. Some were controversial, others were downright confusing and one is in our opinion the best gaming ad we've seen (more on that one later). From crying dolls to floating consoles, Kevin Butler to that Scottish alien girl with the creepy laugh, the gaming giant has been responsible for some memorable moments.

Many of Sony's earlier ads (including said Scottish alien lady) were released with the tagline "Do not underestimate the power of PlayStation", a line that was also part of a print advertising campaign featuring various images with the four PlayStation symbols integrated in some way.

It's going to be interesting to see which direction Sony takes with the PS4 advertising. Will it take another risk with similarly obtuse ads, or will it be more direct with its approach this time?
