3DS Nintendo Direct: As it happened

Catch up on all the latest 3DS announcements here

Another week, another Nintendo Direct. It's made a habit of having these impromptu mini-press conferences hasn't it? Not that we're complaining, they're always exciting, and today's featured a whole lot of release dates and new games.

Highlights of today's latest broadcast included a re-release of Retro Studios' Donkey Kong Country Returns, which is getting a 3D upgrade in time for a summer release; Mario & Luigi: Dream Team', a new entry in its RPG series also coming to the 3DS this summer; and a solid European release date for Fire Emblem: Awakening.

Legend of Zelda fans will be happy to hear that Nintendo revealed and launched a special Zelda Miiverse community where lovers of Link can gather and make merry.

Nintendo also announced hardware bundles for Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate, along with a new Blue Europe-exclusive 3DS XL with Fire Emblem Awakening pre-installed.

Nintendo has dubbed 2013 as the 'Year of Luigi' and, along with the numerous new games announced, it will be delivering fresh DLC for New Super Mario Bros. U. The "large-scale" content pack will change all of the game's existing 80+ challenge courses into new ones and won't star Mario. Iwata called it 'New Super Luigi U'.

Mario Golf will also be making its debut on Nintendo 3DS this summer. Long time series developer Camelot is at the helm once again and promises to deliver "deep golf gameplay that those familiar with the sport will appreciate, but also straightforward controls that anyone can enjoy".
