A Kickstarter project aiming to recreate the feel of classic 90s arcade racers has just passed its funding target, and will now be developed in collaboration with Cave Story studio Nicalis.
The appropriately-named The 90's Arcade Racer is the creation of Greek developer Antonis Pelekanos, who needed £10,000 to bring the project to Windows, Linux, Mac OS and mobile devices. It's now overtaken that target with five days to go and plans to bring the game to the Wii U eShop too.
The 90's Arcade Racer is a love letter to arcade classics like Daytona USA and Virtua Racing. "The three [racing games] that ate up most of my coins were Scud Race, Daytona USA and Indy 500," Pelekanos says on the game's Kickstarter page.
"My goal is to recreate the feeling these games evoked from players by maintaining the colorful, vibrant look and sense of speed but with modern visuals and car handling models."
The newly-announced collaboration with Nicalis means that Pelekanos can concentrate on the game's art design while Nicalis's more experienced programmers can work on the "Unity programming, physics, tuning and general design and production of the game".
The 90's Arcade Racer is due for release at the end of 2013.
