Journey creator and thatgamecompany lead man Jenova Chen has said he's aiming for a 'big financial success' with his next game, which is in development now.
"I wouldn't say that the development of Journey was a successful example of game development," he admitted during a chat with Polygon. "We bankrupted the company," he said.
"I think to have a financial success, that is going to change everyone, it has to be much bigger than a game on the Playstation platform," he said.
Chen says he aims to create a financial success to prove the viability of these types of artistic games, hence the decision to go multi-platform and secure venture capital funding for the development of his next title.
"I run into a lot of lost and frustrated students who study games to work on great art, but then find there is no place for them," he said. "I feel responsible for them because I showed them that is possible, but there is no place for them.
"My resolution is to create a big financial success."
The next game from thatgamecompany remains under wraps, but Chen did hint that he aims to go above and and beyond the 'connection' offered by Journey.
"Journey was focused on connection," he said. "I think we are trying to do one level above that with this game.
"It's very likely that's impossible," he added, before reiterating a focus on player connections. "This will be one level above that connection," he said.
Already a multi-award-winning game, Journey has nominations in six categories amongst the finalists for the 13th annual Game Developers Choice Awards.
