World of Tanks publisher acquires FEAR 3 developer

Wargaming sets its sights on console games

Wargaming, the studio behind hugely successfull MMO World of Tanks, has acquired FEAR 3 developer Day 1 Studios.

Wargaming CEO, Victor Kislyi, indicated the $20 million acquisition was in service of the company's expansion beyond the free-to-play PC market, and into the console gaming space.

"The move into console game development is a huge step for Wargaming, as we begin to expand our presence into new platforms," he said.

In December 2011 Day One Studios suffered layoffs after losing a publishing deal with Konami, for which it was reportedly working on a new entry in the Silent Scope series.

A few months later it revealed 'Reign of Thunder', a free-to-play, multiplayer mech combat game in development at the studio.

Wargaming has confirmed the studio will be renamed 'Wargaming West' and said it is now working on "an unannounced console title." It did not clarify whether production on Reign of Thunder has ceased.
