Journey dev goes independent, multiplatform

Cash injection sees Thatgamecompany split from Sony

Journey and Flower developer thatgamecompany made some of the best games on the PlayStation Store, and now it's going multiplatform.

The studio has announced it's broke away from Sony to make games independently, thanks to $5.5 million in funding (via Gama) from Benchmark Capital.

"Today I am pleased to announce thatgamecompany has raised funding to develop and release our games independently. This enables us to bring our games to more platforms and provide our players the highest quality experience at every point of contact," announced studio co-founder Jenova Chen today.

"We are extremely grateful to Sony and the many players who put their faith in us. Their support has turned Journey into the fastest selling title in PSN history."

Chen wasn't ready to share details on the TGS's next project, but he did say, "We are very excited about our new adventure. Please stay tuned, as we look forward to sharing with you more details about our next game soon."

Chen said last month that the studio will definitely reveal its new game this year, noting, "we intentionally announce our games very early."
