Nintendo DS shifts 30m in Japan

New Super Mario Bros., Pokemon Diamond and Animal Crossing top three games

It might've announced the portable's successor, but the vanilla Nintendo DS has still managed to sell over 30 million units in Japan since its launch in December 2004.

That's according to Famitsu publisher Enterbrain, which says that the top three selling Nintendo DS titles in the region are New Super Mario Bros. at 5,767,262 copies, Pokémon Diamond and Pearl at 5,766,571 copies as well as Animal Crossing: Wild World with 5,133,862 copies.

Earlier today Nintendo announced that it plans to release a new iteration of the DS with built-in 3D technology that requires no glasses.

"[It will have] highly detailed graphics, and it will be necessary to have a sensor with the ability to read the movements of people playing," Nintendo president Satoru Iwata said.
